Curls, Curls, Curls

“Curls curls curls”
…Hey ladies I’m talking to you!Did you know more then 65% of women have naturally curly hair?

Did you know 97% of curly clients are looking for the perfect cut and styling products for their hair?

Did you know there are 4 different types of curls?
1. Loose curls need a product to give their hair body and lift (without having to even dry your hair!)
2. Classic curls need a lightweight product to even out the hydration to help define the curls
3. Tight curls need more intense hydration to elongate the curl which will help fight the frizz
4. Kinky curls have a lower level of porosity so they require intense hydration and restoring properties which help elongate the curl and rebuild their shape

Here’s another fact about curls: curly hair does NOT have to be FRIZZY hair!

Find The *Right* Products For Your Hair

product

I get asked a lot about hair products. Everyone wants to know why they are so important, which ones are “right,” and if they are worth using. Often times there is a huge misconception about hair care products. People think they don’t work. Well if you are using the wrong product for your hair type, then yes, you might feel as though it isn’t “working.” This is why knowledge is king. Finding the right product for your hair can change everything!

People with fine thin hair want more volume and body may feel that mousse or bodifying products are too heavy or sticky on their hair. Or those with thick, curly hair might feel that gel is too much like glue or cement in their hair. Women with straight hair (that have a hard time holding a curl) tend to feel as though a setting lotion, or heat activated styling aid, doesn’t do anything to help their style.

This can all be true… if you are using the wrong product.

Product selection is super important when it comes to finding the right product specific to your own individual needs. Hair care products can be a very personal journey. Some feel aerosol sprays are terrible for the environment. Some prefer organic products. Some love the feeling of oils while others hate using any type of oil. This is why you need to be educated by a knowledgeable stylist (such as myself!) to help guide you to happy hair.

I carry a big selection of products from 4 different product lines that I sell at my salon. I chose each and every one of them with my clients and their many requests, needs and wants in mind. I love my product lines because they all offer something for everyone.

1_prodotti_servizi_trattamenti

I have Alfaparf products that are known for their wonderfully conditioning and repairative shampoo and conditioners. Their styling aides ranging from mousse to hairspray to pomade that offer fabulous hold without leaving a build up on your hair.

neuma-spot-shamp-cond

Then, I have Neuma products which is an all organic, gluten free line. Neuma shampoo gives a great lather, which differs from other organic products which tend to never quite “suds up.” Neuma styling aids range in their level of hold. Their mousse is the best for fine thin hair and never leaves the hair feeling heavy. The smoothing cream, blow dry lotion, and pomade have a wonderful scent that is to die for. You feel as though you are at a spa when you use these products. Read more about Neuma products on my blog about Neuma: here.

ouidad-1

For my curly haired ladies, I of course carry Ouidad products because I am a certified Ouidad stylist which allows me the honor of being able to carry these products in my salon. I have several types of shampoo and conditioners, as well as styling aids such as mousse, gel, sulfate free co wash, and more.

And finally I have Moroccan Oil products which many of you are familiar with. Their moisture shampoo and conditioner are fabulous as well as their oils and hairspray.

If you are looking to help enhance your hairstyle but just don’t know where to start, please call me or message me. I can lead you in the right direction to help figure out what product is best for your specific needs. I can help show you how to use it (how not to use it) and the best combination of products for you. I am so excited to help you love your hair.

Brazilian Blowout

IMG_0091

Having smooth, sleek, and shinny hair seems to be something lots of women want, so I’ve done lots of research, taken many classes and had lots of practice in this area. In fact, I am certified in many smoothing and straightening options because they all offer something a bit different then the next, and they are all worth exploring. One of my most popular treatment options is the Brazilian Blowout system.

People ask me all the time why this specific process is so good and why I recommend it so often. There are many advantages to getting a Brazilian Blowout. Ok first off, let’s be clear about the Brazilian Blowout, it’s actually not a “straightening” treatment per say, but more of a “smoothing” treatment that totally conditions the hair. The Brazilian Blowout adds a tremendous amount of shine to the hair and leaves it feeling very silky. The Brazilian Blowout can be done as often as every 6 weeks without damaging the hair (because it is actually so conditioning) but can last up to 12 weeks for some people.

“Brazilian Blowout professional smoothing treatments are the most innovative and effective in the world.

Through the use of breakthrough bonding technologies, these customizable smoothing treatments actually improve the condition of the hair by creating a protective protein layer around the hair shaft to eliminate frizz and smooth the cuticle.

The end result is smooth, frizz-free hair with radiant shine!”

(taken from the Brazilian Blowout website: https://www.brazilianblowout.com/About)

A note about the Brazilian Blowout is that it is not meant to make your hair stick straight. Instead, it will soften your curls and de-frizz your hair. You may wonder why I think this is a good thing. It’s nice to have a bit of wave or volume in our hair, but as some of you already know, if you have naturally curly hair it has a tendency to grow bigger as the day goes on. When you get a Brazilian Blowout you are actually controlling your curls, and preventing them from getting bigger and bigger by the minute, especially in humidity. So instead of having to tie you hair back by mid-day, you could actually come home with your hair looking the same way it did when you left the house.

This also allows you to have options. You could choose to wear it natural by letting it air dry – you’ll see the curl you have and the new softness it takes on. You will actually have curls you like, rather then fighting with it. And then, when you want to blow it straight, you’ll save about half the time as before since it’s so easy to style straight. Oh and a flat iron won’t be necessary anymore. So you’ll save lots of time, but also your hair will get a break from the amount of heat you’re probably putting on it right now.

IMG_0094

Another advantage to the Brazilian Blowout is when it grows out, your hair actually reverts back to how it was before you had the treatment rather then holding on. It grows out evenly all over your head, not leaving your roots curly and your ends straight like so many other systems will do. Basically, it won’t be obvious that your hair has been treated in comparison the new hair growing in.

A huge advantage to this treatment option is that there is no downtime needed after we do the treatment. Once you leave you can wash your hair, work out, or pulling it up. Normally you need to wait 24-48 hours after a straightening system before being able to do any of that to your hair.

The Brazilian Blowout is extremely, user friendly. Once you try it you won’t want to be without it. It helps tame, smooth and heal your hair while you can sit back and just love your “new” hair.

Let me know if you have any questions I can answer about if the Brazilian Blowout, and if it’s a good option for you and your hair! Call me or email to set up your appointment today, you will be so happy you did!

Curls and Summer: Ouidad-certified

summer curls
With summer here the last thing we want to do is spend hours trying to blow out our curly hair to have a sleek straight look we are craving. With temperatures rising and sweat forming as we stand under the dryer, why not use this time of year to embrace your natural curls? How nice would it be to not have to feel like you need to take a shower all over again, as soon as you’re done with your hair? Learning to not blow-dry could be the best thing you do for yourself this summer, and it’s only just begun! Did you know I’m A Ouidad-certified stylist? Girls, we have options this summer – let’s talk about them.

Summer is about trying to find the time to relax a little, spend extra time with the family, playing in the pool, going to the beach, or your local water parks. You want to be able to let loose and enjoy the moment you are in and stop worrying about your hair! How sad to not go in the water and have fun just because your worried about your straight hair. Instead, let it go! Once you give yourself permission to relax a little and enjoy the summer, you’ll appreciate any extra time… including the time you’re spending having fun instead of in the bathroom with a hot blow dryer and big round brush.

too hot to blowdry

Part of all of this is accepting what you were born with and letting those curls come to life – doing so will let you come to life too!

I know some of you are thinking, “oh no way could I ever do that. My curl is so ugly/frizzy/unruly. You might think that you will feel “ugly” going natural. Well first of all let’s remember that it’s not ugly, you just might not know how to wear it curly. You might not know how to work with what you have, and you might not have the right haircut to work with your curls. Luckily, I have the perfect solution to all of those complaints: Ouidad.

The Ouidad haircut will guarantee to control your curl and tame the frizz so you will actually love your curls. Yes, you heard me right… you will LOVE YOUR CULRS! The Ouidad technique has proven time and time again to take control of those curls, even the most unruly ones.

The Ouidad website (www.ouidad.com) describes this specialized process as 1. understanding our curl 2. identifying your curl and 3. loving your curl.

Ouidad offers the only trademarked cutting technique for curls. The process is a technique that involves “carving & Slicing” based on your specific curls to remove bulk and enhance the natural curl pattern to achieve a more defended ringlet that fit gently into each other like puzzle pieces. A Ouidad stylist (me) is taught to analyze each curl to look for it’s unique pattern and texture, to listen to both the curl and the clients desires to create a plan to optimize the curls.

Now you may come across a stylist that says “oh yeah I can cut curly hair” but ask yourself do you want a mediocre haircut or do you want a Ouidad haircut by a certified Ouidad stylist? There is a big difference between a haircut and and a certified Ouidad haircut. Being a Ouidad certified stylist is a very special certification. I spent time in the Ouidad flagship salon in New York City where I took a two day hands-on course that was supervised by highly trained instructors. We were taught the theory behind the technique and then utilized it on live models. We had to be graded on our work and approved by our instructors. In order to get my certification my work had to pass the inspection of my instructor. Talk about a process! But it was so worth it since I learned so much that I now get to use on my clients. Going through this class was by far the most fun and memorable experience I have had in my 25 plus years of being a hairstylist.

To learn more about Ouidad check out the Ouidad website and even see videos on the process here. They also have a section about learning to love your curls in their blog, check that out here. hope these links inspire you to take the first steps towards loving your natural curls. I would love to share my knowledge with you and help you to embrace your curls and rock that new summer look. Call me or email me to set up your next appointment.

I look forward to meeting you, and your curls, soon!

Change is in the air

change-header

With the holiday behind us and the new year in front of us, this is often the time when we start to feel change in the air. Are you feeling it too? Are you asking yourself, “maybe I should cut my hair shorter? Or maybe it’s time to cut bangs. Or should I put some highlights in my hair…?” …then you will want to read this!

I always think a change is good. Change shows a sense of confidence – it says, “I am not scared to reinvent my look.” Change says, “I am comfortable enough with myself that I can rock ANY look I choose!”

The great things about changing your hair is that it can be drastic or slight. You don’t always have to make a huge change in order to make a huge impression.

I have been a part of assisting people with their changes for many years. That is one of my favorite parts about my job. I personally think it’s great that there are so many options when it comes to change – color, cut, style. We have so many things to choose from, if we didn’t we would be living in a pretty blank and boring hair world. Sometimes simple can be all you need… even a change in the way you hair is parted or how you blow-dry.

If you are ready to make that change, I am ready to help you achieve it. Call me to set up an appointment for your NEW you.

NEUMA Products

image00

I for one LOVE hair products. You may be thinking, “well duh, you’re a hairstylist of course you love hair products.” Well let me rephrase that, I LOVE great hair products! There are millions of hair products on the market ranging from the large variety of shampoos and conditioners, to gels, roots lifts and hair sprays, serums, oils and so many others.

Over the years I have met people that are addicted to their products and those who never used product at all. If you’re ever wondering what products are best for your hair, ask me about it next time I see you. I can help you determine and figure out what will be best for your hair and what isn’t worth spending the money on. Often times we choose our hair products based on how they smell, I mean really who doesn’t want their hair to smell wonderful! The trick though is finding products that smell great and work great.

One of my favorite product lines is NEUMA. NEUMA is an organic line. In the past I was not a fan of the organic products, because I always felt like they tended to dry out the hair instead of moisturizing it. With NEUMA I have been pleasantly surprised and my opinion has been forever changed.

No Matter if I am using a combination of their wonderful shampoo and conditioners or if I’m using a styling product, my hair always smells great and the products leave my hair feeling and looking fantastic. The aroma makes you feel like you are at a spa, so immediately you feel more relaxed but in addition you get the benefit of soft, shiny, luxurious hair! Plus, it’s natural and organic, so you know there’s no extra “stuff” going onto your hair.

A few of my favorite NEUMA products in the styling category is the smoothing cream which I have noticed is great on all hair types. It is great at achieving a beautifully smooth style that helps keep the frizzies at bay while giving your hair lots of shine.

Another I really like is the neuStyling mousse, which is especially good for fine hair. This mousse doesn’t get tacky or heavy in the hair so it helps make it a lot easier to dry your hair. It gives the hair so much volume it’s unbelievable!

Their argan oil is great, you can use it on wet hair or you can add a little to your hair when it is all dried to add a bit more shine. This oil also helps to straighten out curls to give a shiny, smooth style.

reNeu: tangle me free is a great detangler for those of us who struggle with knots that we are tired of trying to yank out all the time. It is a light conditioning spray that makes the hair very easy to comb through. It’s great on longer, thick hair.

The texturizing cream is a favorite among both men and women. It works really well on shorter hair to piece it out, and also to hold the hair in place. Truly fantastic product.

Then we have the medium hold (neuControl medium) and the firm hold (neuControl firm) hair sprays. Pretty self explanatory. If you are looking for a hairspray that you can run your fingers through the medium hold is for you. If you are looking for a spray to hold your hair that last from day to night, the firm hold is your go to product.

Since opening my studio I have introduced my clients to all of these products and the positive feed back I have gotten is unbelievable.

I have clients that have high sensitivity to smells, and they love the NEUMA line. I have other clients that had never been big product users but now can’t wait to keep trying different products from the NEUMA line.

NEUMA has something for everybody.

I also have travel size for those who want to test it out before purchasing the full size, and when they come back they always buy the larger sizes because they are so pleased with the products.

Come on in and check it out, and let’s chat about the best ones to try. Your life is about to get better after you try what will become your new favorite product!

Getting Out Of Your Comfort Zone

blog-540x300

Short or long.
Layers or no layers.
Straight or curly.
Dark or light.
Bangs?
Highlights?!

The list goes on and on and on…

[“MARLA! HELP!” Screams her client]

choices-453x1024 Found on madison-reed.com

There is never a shortage of hair style options, there are only the limitations that we put on ourselves. Isn’t it funny how attached and comfortable we become to our hair and the way we style it?

There are many reasons this happens. Mostly because it’s predictable and easy. We know how to style it, which products to use and what the outcome will be (except for those less desirable, not in our control, bad hair days) and how long it will take to achieve our normal desired look. We get in the routine of getting ready and styling our hair, that we forget that we can change it so easily.

Have you ever moved your furniture around in a room? Take your living room for example, you have a couch, a few tables and lamps and bookcase in addition for a few other things. One day you decide to change things up and move you couch to where you bookcase is and switch the tables, maybe take away the coffee table and add a new pillow… it’s like a new room! You were comfortable before with how things were, but now you feel a bit adventurous and you like it. It’s different and it’s a change, but it’s added something new and interesting. And hey, now the late afternoon sun doesn’t blind you from the couch, since you moved it to a new spot. Who knew it was that easy?

This exciting feeling of a new change happen just by changing up your hair a bit! A new cut, a new color, learning to wear it curly instead of blowdrying it straight everyday. These are all things that you can do to your existing hair that can just change it up a bit! Everything is already there, it’s just about finding a new way to use the existing content.

Besides getting stuck in your comfort zone, there are other reasons why you might get stuck with the same hair. How about the media and social media? If our favorite celebrities make a statement about how they love their long hair and would never cut it, we start the feel the same way. It’s amazing how easily we can be persuaded. How about if someone posts on their Facebook page about how happy they are to have finally grown their hair out and how wonderful they feel? Does it make you wish you had long hair too? Or if someone chops off their long hair and and posts a photo of their sassy, fresh new look – do you think about doing the same? Remember though, sometimes what looks good on someone else won’t look good on you. Or what decision someone else has made might not be the best one or you, your lifestyle, or your face shape.

Similarly, if our husbands or significant other hints that you should grow your hair long, we listen and we might think they won’t find us sexy if we keep it shorter. So we grow it longer because they happened to have said something – not because we prefer it short. As much as we want our partners to think we are gorgeous, we need to spend more time deciding what makes us look and feel gorgeous. You will only be gorgeous and sexy if YOU feel sexy and gorgeous!

My question to you is what do you want? What makes you feel sexy? How do you see yourself and how do you want to see yourself?

Don’t get me wrong beauty does come from within but we all know and understand that someone’s first impression of another is not how big their heart must be, but how they look. We can’t help it, it’s what we see first. Again it’s what society dictates.

theMagic

I say be good to yourself, if you feel better about yourself with short hair cut it short! if you prefer it long, then wear it long! Whatever you decide make sure that decision is for you and nobody else.

I can assist you in the decision making process, with over 25 years experience I have the ability to look at a face shape, take into consideration lifestyle, and the amount of time someone wants to spend on their hair, and be able to offer suggestions about a big change or a smaller more subtle change. I love that my clients put their trust in me. I love that they know I will not steer them wrong. This isn’t always about making a drastic change, instead it can be a fun change that’s actually the right change. Let me help you look your most beautiful.

Like the couch being in a new spot, you wouldn’t haven known until you tried it!

To Bang Or Not To Bang

header

I get asked this question almost on a daily basis. Some women agonize with this decision more then we agonize over what shoes to wear with that dress. Our hairstyle not only dictates how we feel about ourselves but it can also validate feelings of our own youthfulness.

There are many reasons women want bangs, it might be because they have a larger forehead, a widow’s peak or a receding hairline (all which can be hidden with bangs). Or maybe they want their hair to feel fuller because over the years it has thinned out.

I think the real reason behind wanting new bangs is to feel younger!

Bangs represent our childhood. A time when we had boxy bangs (thanks to our moms) or mishmash bangs (thanks to ourselves and our impulse with the kitchen scissors). Whether or not we liked having them as a child we all vacillate between cutting bangs and growing them out as adults. If you had them as a child, you likely grew them out as a teenager to appear and feel older, since they represented a childish haircut you had a a kid.

Fortunately now we have a lot of options on how to wear bangs.

Some of those options for bangs are:
…very short, blunt baby bang,
…longer length right at the eyebrow heavier blunt bang,
…wispy bang, the bang that is cut on an angle to be swept off to the side,
…and just about any other option you try.

Need to get inspired? Try by browsing some bang styles here, on Pinterest!

Deciding to bite the bullet and cut bangs is a big decision because, just like those shoes we picked to go with the dress, we get worried we wont like what we choose once we step outside.

Well that’s simple to fix: you just grow them back out. Lucky our hair grows quickly allowing for us to try new things and take risks – if we don’t like it, we can go back to what we had before.

And then most likely we’ll want to try it again (usually in about 6-12 months – haha!)

I always say a little change every now and then is good for us. Sometimes it helps take us outside our comfort zone. We rely on feedback from our friends and loved ones to help us then determine if this was a good move or not. In my opinion we need to focus more on how we feel about the changes we make in and for ourselves.

So regardless of the mixed reviews you are sure to get, try to decide for yourself. Look in the mirror and if a smile comes on your face you know you did the right thing. My biggest advice is to let me cut them for you. There is a science to the weight, length and angle that is best for your face, so please don’t try this at home! Let me do the cutting!

As a hairstylist I feel fortunate that I can envision this change in you fairly easily so I will never lead you astray. I want you to always look and feel your best. So on your next appointment just remember whether it is to bang or not to bang I will have you feeling as confidant in that decision as you will feel knowing you chose the RIGHT shoes for that dress.

I can’t wait to see you soon.

Decisions, Decisions. What hairstyle should I have?

header
Decisions, decisions. What hairstyle should I have?

How many of you feel like you are stuck in a rut with your hairstyle?

You might feel like you look best with long hair and you like how it looks on you. You might also love the ease of and being able to quickly pull it up, especially in the summer. Sure, you’re used to this style, but have you ever wondered, “is this REALLY the best look for me” or have you ever thought that maybe it has become your security blanket?

On the other hand, how many of you dream of having long hair but just can’t seem to get past that in between growing out phase?

Don’t get me wrong sometimes the style we already have is actually the most flattering one for us, but sometimes it’s worth branching out and trying something new.

Our hair speaks volumes on how we feel about our own identity. Change can be a scary thing.

But it can also be liberating!

There are many things you can change on your hair: the length, the color, taking curly hair straight or embracing your curls instead of trying to fight them. Any change can be a good change. Big or small.

Look at it as reinventing yourself, spice things up a little bit.

I know how it feels to want to keep your long hair because that’s the way you feel your best and that is all well and good, so why not play around with your hair color?

There are so many options to choose from.

For those of you that are ready to come out of your shell a little and spice things up by embracing a new shorter cut there is a range of options to choose from: a bob, longer bob (a “lob”), a pixie (if you want to really get bold) or a shag – and the list goes on and on.

Give this some thought and let’s talk about it on your next appointment.
I think you may be surprised at how happy the right change will make you feel.

Decisions, decisions, decisions!

Eating For Your Hair

healthyFoods
We have all either heard people say I workout so I can eat, or I just had a great workout so I can eat that extra piece of cake/second helping of pasta. Although it is fun to justify why we are entitled to splurge, it may not always be the most realistic approach.

When I say you should eat for your hair, I mean that in the most literal way. The foods we choose to eat can both help us and harm us; from a healthy heart to healthy hair.

There are certain foods that aide in supporting the porosity, texture, and overall appearance of our hair. Biotin (also known as B7) is one of the top vitamins to aide in healthy hair. Biotin, along with the other B-complex vitamins, has the main functions of helping your body to process energy, and of carrying carbon dioxide through your body. Your sweat glands, nerve tissue and bone marrow also function at their peak efficiency when you have proper Biotin levels.

“Biotin an essential and important vitamin for fast hair growth is known by almost everybody. This is more popular because it’s mostly used in the production of most hair products like shampoos and conditioners. It helps to keep your hair color and stimulates scalp circulation. It can be found in dairy products, cheese and nuts.”

Omega 3 fatty acids are not only good at reducing flaking of the scalp, but it helps balance the oils in your body. Eating fatty fish (like salmon) twice a week for hydrated hair. Some other source are trout and flaxseeds.

Vitamin A is great for cell growth which aides in hair growth. It is an antioxidant that promotes healthy scalp and encourages hair growth. It is found in foods such as vegetables, dairy products and fish.

Protein deficiencies can lead to hair loss, so any diet plan that has an all or nothing concept is not a good one to follow. Lean meats like chicken and fish are a great source of protein, and easily digestible

Vitamin C will help regulate oil production on your scalp. If you are producing too much oil,the hair follicle can get clogged up preventing the hair to grow at the normal average of 1/4-1/2 inch per month. So be sure to eat your spinach, tomatoes, and broccoli. It has being proven that vitamin C plays an important role faster hair growth. This vitamin for fast hair growth is an antioxidant that strengthens hair shaft and hair follicles and prevents hair breakage.

Nuts, specifically walnuts, are high in vitamin E. This vitamin helps to speed up hair growth, as well as help with male pattern baldness, so keep that circulation revved up and eat some walnuts.

Although we can take vitamins to get all these very important nutrients in our system, it is more important to get it by ingesting the vitamins through our food. So again, eat for your hair and see it shine!
